Learning how to swim is an essential part of Australian life. Aquastar Swim Schools will give you the confidence that you are providing your family with the skills they need to reduce the risks this summer and begin a positive, life-long and respectful relationship with the water.
Lessons include water safety skills to help build confidence as well as stroke correction and development in a fun, safe and interactive environment.
Why choose Aquastar?
- We are an established and trusted Learn to Swim program.
- We maintain small class ratios to give students the attention they need.
- Our program consists of 14 levels, Infant to Squad, designed to provide all children with optimum progression.
Aquastar Swim Schools’ Learn to Swim classes are set by ability rather than age, which is why we assess every child’s ability to ensure they begin swimming in the correct level.
During your first lesson we will conduct a quick Learn to Swim Assessment. This will only take 5-10 minutes where the instructor will ask your child to perform a few simple tasks in the water. This will ensure they are then enrolled into the right class for their skill level.

BEGINNER 1
Class Size: Maximum of 4 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
For new swimmers, this class encourages water confidence and submersion. The main goals include unassisted movement through the water (walking, running, hopping) and an assisted relaxed back float. Safe pool entries and exits are encouraged.
BEGINNER 2
Class Size: Maximum of 4 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
This class is for children who are confident in the water but have a limited swimming ability. Our aim is to build independence. Students will develop a strong freestyle kick (often referred to as a “torpedo”), and gain an understanding of “big arms”. A relaxed submersion with a return to the wall will be introduced.
BEGINNER 3
Class Size: Maximum of 4 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
The emphasis in this level is the introduction to straight arm freestyle (controlled, smooth arm movement). Students will also strengthen their freestyle kick and backstroke kick (“soldier” kick). A deep water jump entry with a return to the wall will be introduced.
INTERMEDIATE 1
Class Size: Maximum of 4 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
At this level students begin to streamline their swimming. Swimmers will be introduced to backstroke arms, and a side breath is introduced in freestyle. Basic diving is taught from a sitting position.
INTERMEDIATE 2
Class Size: Maximum of 5 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
Students will be introduced to 4 new skills – bilateral breathing and bent arm recovery for freestyle, continuous backstroke arms, and breaststroke kick. The basic dive is progressed from sitting to crouching.
INTERMEDIATE 3
Class Size : Maximum of 5 students
Class Duration : 30 minutes
The emphasis in this level is on correcting freestyle and backstroke technique – distances of 25m will be attempted. Swimmers will be introduced to full breaststroke (arms, breath, and timing) and dolphin kick. Diving technique is progressed to a standing dive.
ADVANCED 1
Class Size: Maximum of 6 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
Significant emphasis is placed on stroke techniques for freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Students are taught a forward somersault (in preparation for tumble turns), and a standing dive maintaining a glide.
ADVANCED 2
Class Size: Maximum of 6 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
Students will continue to work on all aspects of stroke development, increasing consistency and endurance – distances of 50m will be attempted for freestyle and backstroke. Butterfly arms will be introduced. Racing dives and tumble turns is taught.
ADVANCED 3
Class Size: Maximum of 6 students
Class Duration: 30 minutes
The main goal is preparation for the Squad program. Swimmers will focus on further correction of strokes and developing proper techniques, while increasing distance. 50m of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke are expected, as well as 15m of recognisable butterfly.
JUNIOR SQUAD
Class Duration: 60 minutes
Junior Squad is all about making a smooth transition from Advanced 3 to our main Squad Program. With a focus still on Learn to Swim, Junior Squad will further refine specific strokes and skills, working towards efficient swimming. It is an introduction to swimming as a form of endurance training, and will teach its members basic Squad etiquette and terminology. Swimmers will gain a basic understanding of race day etiquette, competitive techniques, and recoding and improving on personal bests through our end-of-term time trials (50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle).
SQUAD
Class Duration: 60 minutes
Squad is the final stage of our program. Its members are proficient in all strokes and aspects of Squad swimming. The focus now shifts from Learn to Swim to endurance and speed training, and can act as a stepping stone to club life and competitive swimming. Swimmers are focusing on improving personal bests (50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle), and will test their endurance with distance swims (1km, 2km). Our Squad Program can also compliment other chosen sports or activities, with the hour long sessions significantly increasing a participant’s cardiovascular fitness levels.
